4 UNKNOWN FACTS ABOUT AUTISTIC ADULTS

#1 AUTISM & LONELINESS
Often, individuals do not recognize the signs of autism until they become adults. They usually like being alone, but they report feeling lonely and dissatisfied with social support. “Social anxiety is a common misdiagnosis of high-masking autism” (neurodivergentinsights.com).

 “Suicide is currently the leading cause of early death for autistic people” (autistica.org.uk)! More than 6 in 10 individuals with autism have considered suicide. About 8 in 10 autistic adults have a mental health condition. They don’t fully comprehend why they have difficulty connecting with people socially or engaging in conversation, but they do realize they are different. Watch the following video:


#2 AUTISM & BULLYING
Over 60% of children and young adults with autism experience bullying. They have trouble “reading the room” and understanding people’s feelings.
 

#3 AUTISM & WORK LIFE
About 66% of adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are unemployed. Many cannot get a job. The ones that do, suffer bullying in the professional workplace. According to verywellhealth.com, “most workplace programs for disabled adults were not developed with autism in mind. Rather, they were intended to work for people with intellectual or physical disabilities. Watch the following video:
 


#4 AUTISM & STUTTERING
While stuttering is not specific to ASD, research suggests that it is much more common in people with ASD than in the general population. In fact, stuttering has been found to be one of the most common speech problems in ASD.
